Snowmobiling This Winter?

There are many snowmobile trails in our state. Snowmobiling is permitted on certain state-owned properties through posted, written, conditional permission directed to the general public for the use of defined trails. It also is permitted on all state-owned water bodies and you can plan your snowmobile outing at the following state forests: • Cockaponset State Forest - Cedar Swamp Block

• Cockaponset State Forest - Turkey Hill Block

• Housatonic State Forest

• Mohawk State Forest

• Natchaug State Forest

• Naugatuck State Forest

• Nipmuck State Forest

• Pachaug State Forest

• People’s State Forest

• Pootatuck State Forest

• Shenipsit State Forest

Registration. Registration is not required for a snowmobile operated on private property. However, in order to be operated on public land in Connecticut, snowmobiles must be registered in Connecticut, unless registered in Vermont (due to reciprocity). They may not be operated on public highways unless crossing the highway is unavoidable and safe. The registration certificate must be carried on the vehicle when it is being operated.

Insurance. While there is no state insurance requirement for snowmobiles, liability insurance and coverage for theft of, or damage to, the snowmobile is advised to protect your assets. (Naturally, our agency can help you with this.)

Children. Are you planning to bring the kids with you? There are age requirements that you need to be aware of. Except for operation on private lands, snowmobile operators must be 16 or older, and properly licensed.

Equipment. Snowmobiles must be equipped with a functioning muffler meeting statutory requirements for vehicle mufflers, properly operating brakes, sufficient and adequate front and rear lighting and reflecting devices.
