Earthquakes are not a covered cause of loss

After experiencing 5 earthquakes today, many residents of the Plainfield, CT area are finding out that the typical homeowners policy does not include coverage for earthquake damage. The typical home policy is written on a special cause of loss policy form which insures the building against all direct forms of physical damage except those specifically excluded. Earthquake is one of those exclusions.

Like most things, this is not a problem until it happens. As earthquakes are not common to this area, most people are never affected by this exclusion. However, recent events show that this could be problematic. The good news is that coverage can be purchased by endorsement for an additional premium.

If you are interested in learning more about insuring against earthquake damage or insurance in general, please give us a call. We are happy to help.
