PIA of Connecticut had a great showing for this year’s Advocacy Month. The delegation led by Tim Russell, national director from Connecticut and PIA’s secretary and assistant treasurer, met with Representatives Elizabeth Esty (D), Joe Courtney (D) and Jim Himes (D). Members from PIA Connecticut reported positive feedback from their meetings, saying that the members of Congress were supportive of PIA’s issues.
Rep. Courtney is the sponsor of the PIA endorsed legislation Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2015 (H.R. 2050), which aims to repeal a provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) set to take effect in 2018 that would levy a 40% excise tax, or "Cadillac Tax" on certain health insurance plans. This was a great opportunity for members of PIA Connecticut to thank Rep. Courtney for being a leader on eliminating the Cadillac Tax and supporting maintaining stability in the health insurance market.
"It was nice to sit with Congressman Courtney and show him our (PIA’s) issue paper on Healthcare Reform and say, ‘Hey, we support you, it’s right there in writing,’" said Tim Russell. "The PIA issue papers are not only great for giving to my member of Congress and their staff, they are also useful for giving me and my team background of the issues before meeting with members of Congress, as are the PIA talking points."
